Yes, you are correct; these changes are yet to be rigorously tested. However, regarding the stats, you should keep in mind that the participants are not hired for usability testing but for the card sorting itself.
We are not designing a product/system which requires the user to know how to read braille. It's only for card sorting, where we have the luxury of hiring someone who knows how to read Braille. The insights and the findings will help us to design a better product.
This adapted method will help us to include people with visual impairment rather than mimicking blindness by other people.
